Coming off a Week 1 WIN, The Fighting Saints travelled to Dick Kerner Stadium to face the Waubonsie Valley Warriors, notching a Week 2 10-7 WIN in what proved to be a low-scoring game.
Receiving the opening kick-off, the Warriors struck first with an opening possession touchdown. That would prove to be the only points scored in the game by Waubonsie Valley as the Saints defense got rolling with some big defensive and special teams play that limited their opponents’ offensive gains throughout the rest of the game.
On their first possession of the game, the Saints were able to move the ball, but the drive stalled, and the Saints had to settle for a Sam Frausto field goal from the 21-yard line to make the score 7-3.
Late in the first quarter, the Saints defense came up big with a Mac Paul interception to stop the Warriors but are unable to capitalize and turn the ball over on downs on the post-interception possession. The Saints defense delivers again on the Warriors next possession with a Mac Paul sack of Luke Elsea followed by another Mac Paul interception two plays later.
The Saints offense took advantage of the turnover with a nice offensive drive that was capped off by a Mason Tousignant 9-yard touchdown pass from Lane Robinson that would send the Saints into the half leading Waubonsie Valley 10-7.
While the Saints were able to move the ball offensively, the storyline of the game were penalties that negated scoring plays including a Mason Tousignant punt return for a touchdown that was called back late in the 2nd quarter and a pass from Lane Robinson to Blake Schuette for a touchdown that was called back in the 4th quarter that was set-up by outstanding special teams play on a Mason Leach fumble recovery off a Waubonsie Valley muffed punt.
In addition to a strong defensive performance, the Saints rushing game was solid behind a strong O-Line and Trent Matejko delivered another very solid performance at running back notching 134 yards on 25 carries with his signature elusive and punishing running style.
Saint Charles East is now 2-0 on the season and goes into a week 3 home game against the Lake Park Lancers at historic Norris Stadium.
